Government’s efforts at all levels (Federal, State and LGAs),to build and own a befitting national and state capital cities for all Nigerians have been threatened consistently over the years by the persistent collapse of structures involving billions of lost properties and lives of citizens. Many of the incidents happened as a result of the refusal by developers to comply to laid-down rules and regulations governing project(s) development. The situation in the last five years had been quite worrisome where several innocent citizens’ lives are lost to avoidable accidents resulting from collapse of buildings. In several instances, the collapse of these buildings were traced to poor conception, lack of or poor project documents, including drawings, specifications and bills , poor designs based on wrong analysis of the soil condition prevalent in the sites of such projects.
In August 2018, the FCT received the unfortunate collapse of a four storey multi-purpose building under construction located at plot 711, B04, Jabi District, Abuja, FCT, where not only monies were lost but several lives of innocent Nigerians involved. Government instituted a panel of enquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the incident. The committee’s report submitted in October 2018 include far reaching recommendation that when implemented would curb these prevalent challenges and bring collapse of structures in the FCT, to a complete stop.
The collapse of a building housing a school in Ita Faji Lagos was indeed a disaster too many. This was followed by that of Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital and lately, Onitsha.
