House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has given Mike Pence, U.S. Vice President, 24 hours to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office.
Pelosi vowed to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump if his deputy ignored her call.
The house speaker who is one of Trump’s most vocal critics in his tumultuous presidency, said the president represents an “imminent threat” to democracy.
Recall how it was reported that four people died and 52 were arrested after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.
Trump has consistently faulted the election which truncated his second term ambition. He has not provided proof of the electoral irregularities he alleges even as he said he would not be attending Biden’s inauguration ceremony.
Pelosi said and we quote
“The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action,”.
According to Pelosi If it is blocked by Republicans, which is almost certain, the House will convene for a full House vote on Tuesday, it added.
Pelosi explained that the resolution calls on Pence “to convene and mobilise the Cabinet to activate the 25th Amendment to declare the President incapable of executing the duties of his office.” Under the procedure, the vice president “would immediately exercise powers as acting President,” she explained.
